An Honest Review of the GHD Duet Blowdry: Is It Worth the Hype?

Over the past few years, the hair tool market has exploded with innovative gadgets promising salon quality results at home. From damage free curls courtesy of the Dyson Airwrap to its many competitors like the Shark FlexStyle and straightening brushes such as the Babyliss Air Wand, there’s a tool tailored for just about everyone. As a beauty editor, I’ve been fortunate enough to test many of these new arrivals. While I’ve enjoyed experimenting with them, I often find myself reverting to my trusty hairdryer and curling wand once the novelty fades.

So, when GHD launched its new wet to dry blowdry brush last month, I was sceptical. Do we really need another hair tool? My initial indifference stemmed from past experiences with the original GHD Duet. Those early straightening irons gave me flashbacks to my younger years the sizzling sound of hair being straightened still haunts me. Even though the technology behind the new GHD Duet has evolved significantly from the 90s Babyliss Steam Straightener, once you’ve smelled singed hair, it’s an experience you don’t easily forget.

But let’s be honest curiosity got the better of me. The moment the GHD Duet Blowdry (£380) landed on my desk, I couldn’t resist. It might have been 10 p.m., and I wasn’t due for a hair wash for another day or so, but that didn’t stop me from giving it a whirl.

After a month of testing and trialing the GHD Duet Blowdry, I might have found the answer to skipping salon blow dries altogether. Read on to see my results and find out if this tool lives up to the hype.

How to Use the GHD Duet Blowdry

Effortlessly styled with a soft, fresh blow dry look.

The first time I used this tool, I didn’t hold back. I started with soaking wet hair and skipped any styling products to truly test its capabilities. To my delight, there wasn’t a singed end in sight. My hair looked sleek, glossy, and had noticeable volume. If speed is what you’re after, here’s the scoop: it took me about 30 minutes to dry and style my hair. While that might seem lengthy compared to some rapid air stylers on the market, considering how long a traditional brush and hairdryer would take, it’s pretty efficient.

I worked in small sections, roughly two inches wide, brushing the tool through each until fully dry. Alternating the direction curling some sections under and flipping others out gave me that bouncy, salon quality blow dry finish. The end result? It genuinely looked like I’d just stepped out of a top London salon.

The second time around, I let my hair air dry until it was about 80% dry before using the tool. It effortlessly tamed any frizz or natural waves, and this time, it took under 10 minutes. For those pressed for time, this method is a game changer. If your hair tends to fall flat, I’d recommend using a mousse or a root lifting product like Color Wow Root Lift (£17) beforehand. To amp up the shine, a few sprays of Glaze Super Sleek Shine Spray (£18) not only protect but also give an extra glassy finish.

What to Consider Before Buying the GHD Duet Blowdry

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the price tag. At £380, it’s undeniably a significant investment. Before taking the plunge, consider your hairstyling preferences. If you love tousled waves or defined curls, this might not be the tool for you. While it’s fantastic at what it does delivering a smooth, voluminous blowdry it doesn’t replace a curling tong for lasting waves and curls. It’s essential to recognize that this isn’t an all in one tool; it excels in its specific function.

Personally, using this twice a week eliminates the need for salon blow dries before events or nights out, making it worth every penny. I like to think of it in terms of cost per use if it saves me frequent trips to the salon, it’s a justified expense. After all, a little bit of “girl math” never hurt anyone!
