Is Away Travel Worth the Hype? My Honest Review

What Is Away Travel, Anyway?

Let me start with this: I wasn’t always sold. A suitcase with a built-in battery? It sounded like a gimmick. But after a couple of years, four continents, and more airport miles than I care to admit, I’ve had a total change of heart. So here’s my unfiltered take on Away Travel’s luggage.

At first glance, it looks like just another sleek carry-on or travel bag. But it’s a lot more. Founded in 2015 and based in New York City, Away is the brainchild of former Warby Parker execs. They set out to tackle actual travel problems like flimsy luggage and lackluster design and built what’s now a DTC star backed by celebrity buzz and a $1.4 billion valuation.

The Price Tag

Yes, Budget Mode Off. The standard Carry-On lands at around $295, and the Bigger Carry-On is similar. That’s not cheap luggage but it’s not a designer tag either. Considering its durability, smart features, and lifetime warranty well, the value starts to make sense.

Why I Finally Boarded the Away Train

I was skeptical—battery-operated luggage and hype don’t always equal quality. But after a rough trip broke my suitcase’s compressor handle, I gave Away a shot.

Fast forward to today: the suitcase has been through rain, cobblestones, and cramped subways and still rolls like new. TSA locks, smooth spinner wheels, and hidden laundry bags? Game changers.

If You’re Feeling Impatient: Away Alternatives

Away’s popularity means their most-loved suitcases often sell out fast. If you’re in a hurry to upgrade your travel gear, here are some strong contenders to consider. While I haven’t personally road-tested all of these, I’ve done my research and these four stand out for quality, durability, and style.

1. TravelPro Maxlite 5

Price: Around $220

Features: The Maxlite 5 is a favorite among frequent flyers for its feather-light build and surprisingly spacious interior. It’s made from water- and stain-resistant fabric, with smooth-rolling spinner wheels and a sturdy telescopic handle.

Why It’s a Good Alternative: If you want reliable performance without paying luxury prices, the Maxlite 5 is a solid choice. It may not have Away’s sleek hard-shell look, but its weight advantage makes navigating airports a breeze.

2. Samsonite Cosmolite

Price: Around $300

Features: Crafted from Samsonite’s Curv material, the Cosmolite offers a strong yet lightweight hard shell. It’s got ultra-quiet wheels, a TSA-approved lock, and a unique ripple design that stands out on the carousel.

Why It’s a Good Alternative: Perfect for travelers who want the style and durability of a hard-shell suitcase. It’s slightly pricier than Away’s entry models, but you’re getting a case that can take serious abuse without looking worn.

3. Béis Carry-On Roller

Price: Around $268

Features: This carry-on is packed with clever touches: a built-in weight indicator to avoid surprise fees, a compression flap for extra packing space, and 360° wheels for smooth rolling. It also has a padded handle for extra comfort.

Why It’s a Good Alternative: If you like Away’s thoughtful interior design but want more packing tech, Béis gives you that plus an equally chic look. The built-in scale alone is worth it for peace of mind.

4. Rimowa Cabin

Price: Around $1,500

Features: Handcrafted in Germany, Rimowa’s aluminum shell is the definition of premium. Its double spinner wheels glide silently, the handles feel substantial, and the craftsmanship is second to none.

Why It’s a Good Alternative: If money’s no object and you want a lifetime travel companion, Rimowa is the ultimate status symbol. It’s a splurge, but one you’ll be proud to roll into any airport lounge.

My Experience After 2+ Years

I asked my travel companions to use the suitcase—and let’s just say it wasn’t always serene. It’s ridden in bus holds, survived stair airlifts, and still looks new. That magic eraser does wonders for scuffs. Minor gripe: handles feel a little thin, but the new underslung handle helps a lot.

Pros & Cons

ProsCons
1. Feels effortless to roll, even fully packed.
2. Lifetime warranty makes it a long-term partner.
3. Elegant design that pops in baggage claim.
1. Pricier than comparable suitcases.
2. Some users report mixed experiences with customer service.

Is It Worth the Price?

Absolutely—for me, yes. It’s not just luggage; it’s a travel companion. It looks good, performs well, and lasts. For frequent travelers who value design and reliability, Away hits the sweet spot.

Creative Ways to Use It

  • Rolling Office: Fits laptop and files perfectly for remote work on the go.
  • Weekend Bundler: Use the laundry bags to sort clean and dirty—game-changer.
  • Decoration: Brilliant in spare rooms. Functional and chic—even without travel.
